You have felt this one. The call connects and the other person is a dark smudge with a voice that sounds like it is coming from the bottom of a bucket. Ten seconds later it freezes on a half-smile. Nobody did anything wrong. The setup just fought them.

The good news is that nearly all of these problems have boring, free fixes. These video chat tips take about five minutes to put in place, and they work on any site, PinkChat included.

Fix the light first

Light does more for a video call than a new camera ever will. Face a window if you can, and keep any bright lamp in front of you instead of behind. A cheap trick: put a lamp with a white shade just behind your phone, pointing at you.

If the room is dim, raising the screen brightness on a laptop gives you a soft glow for free. Avoid mixed colours, such as a blue screen and a yellow lamp, because they turn skin tones odd.

Frame yourself properly

  • Eye level. Stack your phone or laptop on books so the lens is level with your eyes.
  • Head and shoulders. Fill the frame without cutting off the top of your head.
  • Look at the lens now and then. It feels odd, and it is what makes the other person feel looked at.
  • Clean the lens. A thumbprint turns the whole picture soft.

Sort out the sound

People will forgive a grainy picture but not a bad sound. Use headphones if you have any pair at all: they stop the other person's voice from looping back through your speaker as an echo. Close the window if there is traffic. Mute notifications so they do not ping mid-sentence.

If you are in a voice-only chat, which is one way to talk to strangers without a camera, sound is the only thing that counts, so spend your effort there.

Watch what is behind you

A video call shows more of your life than you think. Letters on a desk, a framed photo with your surname, a window with a recognisable view: any of them can say more than you meant to. Before you start, glance at the frame and move or tidy anything personal.

A plain wall or a bookshelf works well. If your room is busy, turning slightly so you sit against a quieter corner is easier than cleaning up. Some browsers and devices also offer a blur option for the background, which is worth switching on if yours does.

Check your signal

A frozen picture is nearly always the connection. Wi-Fi in the same room is better than mobile data in a stairwell. Close other tabs and apps that stream video. If someone else in the house is downloading something large, wait or ask them to pause.

On a phone, add PinkChat to your home screen and it works like a pink video chat app, with the browser out of your way.

The first thirty seconds

  1. 1

Say hi and check the basics

"Hey, can you hear me?" gets a laugh and tells you whether sound is working.

  2. 2

    Ask something small

Where they are, what time it is there. Easy to answer and it keeps the door open.

  3. 3

    Decide at the one-minute mark

If it is working, stay. If not, say thanks and tap Next.

Good to know

What is the easiest way to look better on a video call?

Face a window or put a lamp in front of you, and keep the camera at eye level.

How do I stop the echo?

Use headphones. If you cannot, lower the speaker volume and move away from the speaker.

Why does my video freeze?

Usually a weak connection. Move closer to the router, close other tabs and try Wi-Fi instead of mobile data.

Why is my camera black?

A blocked permission or another app using the camera. Allow access in the browser, close other apps and reload.

Do I need special equipment?

No. Any phone or laptop with a camera works. Light and sound matter more than the camera.

Try it yourself

Set up your light, check your sound and try a call. Allow your camera and tap Start. Your first matches are free.
